There are quite a few crossword books out there that claim to be from the New York Times, only to find that they are poor quality imitations, complete with misspellings and idiotic clues. One gave a clue "about our country," and I couldn't think of anything that fit the spaces. It turned out to be "Australian.' Anyway, if your buy the books that Will Shortz edits, you will get the real deal. This is the 3rd book in this series that I have worked on, and they really are NYT puzzles. Enjoy.
